FireMan & I have gone every year since we've been together, and he went before then. Of course, we also live just a few hours away.
We love it. There is SOOOOOO much to see & do. We usually only get one day there, so he's only a class there one year, and another year took some certification exams there, but we'll spend an entire day (8-10 hours) just walking thru the exhibits checking everything out. It is seriously HUGE.
We love it.
If you're able to come, I think it's definitely coming at least once to check everything out. Especially with both you & your hubby being firefighters. And not only is there plenty to see at the conference, Indy's a nice town, with plenty to do, so could easily make a nice mini-vacation out of it.
Also - not sure how the tax thing works in Canada, but admission, parking, etc. is tax deductible in the U.S. for firefighters, since it is a professional / educational conference in their field.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! Some of the finest instructors in North America, most challenging and informative courses you'll ever take. It is expensive, however. If you are considering taking any of the HOT classes I wouldn't waiver too long, they fill up quickly.
As a side note, there are always a few blogging get-togethers during the week as well. Great opportunity to meet other bloggers (like me :) face to face and get to know them.
ABSOLUTELY! It is a great event--everything from awesome instructors and classes to the largest fire service trade show in the world. Great opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas.
If you are going to go---sign up (early) for the HOT classess--but take something out of your comfort zone. I took a 16 hour elevator class--it was the best training I ever received on elevators.
Th classroom sessions run from Wed--Fri and ou can come and go as you please. So, if you walk into a class and decide that it isn't what you are looking for, you can go to a different class. Some classess fill up really fast so, I always have a few back-up plans.
The social aspect is over the top. There is the FOOLS Bash, Stop,Drop Rock and Roll, and the Indy guys out on a big party a their Union Hall. There's a minor league baseball team, a firefighter hocket tournament, and a lot of bars!
The trade show is amazing. If it's your first time, you definitely will need a full day to take it all in.
Transportation between hotels and classes is provided so, I wouldn't even rent a car. Our hotel charged $25/day for parking with no in and out priveleges. That's almost as bad as Chicago!

Never been. Wish I could. Go if you get the chance.
